Privacy

The short version

  • We collect as little as we can: mostly your email address, and order details if you buy something.
  • Audio you load into MELT stays in your browser. It isn't uploaded to us.
  • We never sell your information, and we don't use advertising trackers.
  • We only email you if you ask us to, and every email has an unsubscribe link.
  • You can download or delete your account data yourself from your account window, or ask us to see, fix or delete anything at any time: hello@oddhoursaudio.com.

Who we are

Odd Hours ("we", "us") makes small audio instruments that run in the browser, starting with MELT / 001. Odd Hours is the trading name of Odd Hours Audio, a registered business name of Zac Cause (ABN 46 187 830 165), a sole trader based in Victoria, Australia.

This policy explains what personal information we collect through oddhoursaudio.com, our instruments and our emails, why we collect it, and what you can do about it. We handle personal information in line with the Australian Privacy Principles in the Privacy Act 1988 (Cth). Where other privacy laws apply to you, such as the GDPR in the UK or EU, we follow those too.

Some features below, such as accounts and purchases, aren't live yet. They're marked coming soon and are covered here so this policy is ready when they are.

What we collect, and why

If you join the email list

Your email address, when and where you signed up, and whether you confirmed. Our email provider also records whether our emails are delivered, opened or clicked. We use this to send you the updates you asked for, and nothing else.

If you create an account coming soon

Your email address and sign-in details (or the name and email from a sign-in service you choose, such as Google), plus a record of which instruments you own, any gifts linked to your account and your remaining free exports. Accounts and sign-in are handled by Clerk.

We also keep a simple export log: which instrument you exported from, at which quality, and when. It never includes your audio or your file names. We use it to count your free exports and to help if something goes wrong with a download.

We use all of this to sign you in and unlock what you've paid for.

If you buy something coming soon

Purchases are handled by Paddle, which acts as the merchant of record: Paddle sells to you on our behalf, takes payment and handles tax. Paddle collects your name, email, country, payment details and anything it needs for tax and fraud checks. We receive your order details (what you bought, when, the price and your email) but never your full card or bank details.

When you use MELT

MELT works inside your browser. Audio you load, and the takes you make, are processed and stored on your own device, not uploaded to us. Takes and settings are kept in your browser's storage, and you can remove them at any time by deleting them in MELT or clearing your browser data.

When you contact us

Your email address and whatever you choose to tell us, so we can reply and help.

When you visit the site

Like any website, our hosting provider processes technical information such as your IP address, browser type and the pages you request, to deliver the site and protect it from abuse. Our fonts are hosted with the site, so loading a page doesn't contact anyone else.

We don't use advertising or cross-site tracking. If we ever add visitor analytics, we'll use a privacy-friendly tool that doesn't track you across sites, and update this page first.

Cookies and browser storage

We don't use advertising cookies. We use your browser's storage for things that make the site work, like your MELT takes and settings. When accounts arrive, signing in uses a small cookie to keep you signed in, and Paddle's checkout uses cookies to process a payment securely. These are needed for those features, so they can't be switched off while you use them.

Who we share it with

We never sell or rent your personal information. We share it only with the services that help us run Odd Hours, and only what each one needs:

ServiceWhat it does for usBased in
CloudflareHosts the website and stores account and purchase recordsUSA, global network
KitSends our emails and stores the email listUSA
Clerk coming soonAccounts and sign-inUSA
Paddle coming soonCheckout, payment details, tax and refunds, as merchant of recordUK, USA

Each has its own privacy policy and security obligations. If we add or change a service that handles your personal information, we'll update this table. We may also disclose information where the law requires it.

Information stored outside Australia

Most of these services store data outside Australia, mainly in the USA, the UK and the EU. We choose established providers with strong security and privacy commitments, and we take reasonable steps to make sure they handle your information in a way that's consistent with the Australian Privacy Principles.

Emails

We only send marketing emails if you've signed up and confirmed your address. Every email says who it's from and has a one-click unsubscribe link, as required by the Spam Act 2003 (Cth). If you buy something, we may also send emails about your order, which aren't marketing.

How long we keep it

  • Email list: until you unsubscribe. After that we keep only a note of your address so we don't email you again.
  • Accounts: until you delete your account. "Delete my account" in your account window removes your account, your export log and any gifts linked to it.
  • Purchase records: five years, because Australian tax law requires it. If you delete your account, we keep these records without any link to it. Paddle also keeps its own records as the seller, under its own privacy policy.
  • Emails to us: as long as needed to help you, then deleted when no longer needed.

Your choices and rights

If you have an account, you can do the two most common things yourself, from your account window:

  • Download my data gives you a copy of everything we hold about your account, as a JSON file.
  • Delete my account removes your account, your export log and any gifts, as described above.

You can also ask us at any time to:

  • tell you what personal information we hold about you, and give you a copy
  • correct anything that's wrong
  • delete your information, unless we have to keep it by law (such as purchase records)
  • stop using your information for a particular purpose, such as emails

If you're in the UK or EU, you also have the right to object to processing, ask us to restrict it, and take your data elsewhere. Email hello@oddhoursaudio.com and we'll reply within 30 days. We may need to check it's really you first.

Keeping it safe

We use reputable providers, encrypted connections and limited access to protect your information. No system is perfect, though. If a data breach is likely to cause you serious harm, we'll tell you and the relevant regulator as the law requires.

Children

Odd Hours isn't directed at children under 13, and we don't knowingly collect their information. If you think a child has given us their details, let us know and we'll delete them.

Complaints

If you're unhappy with how we've handled your information, email hello@oddhoursaudio.com and we'll try to put it right within 30 days. If you're still not satisfied, you can complain to the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner at oaic.gov.au, or to your local data protection authority if you're in the UK or EU.

Changes to this policy

We'll update this page when what we do changes, such as when accounts and purchases go live, and change the date at the top. If a change is significant, we'll tell people on the email list.
